The card game for
people who love numbers (or wish they did)
Award:
GAMES Magazine 100
1-4 players, ages 7 to 107
How to Play: EQUALS is played with 54 cards:
36 are printed with numbers (0-9) and 18 with the symbols for addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division. The dealer can deal any
ODD number of cards 3, 5, 7, or 9. The idea is to use ALL the cards
in your hand to make a sequence of numbers and signs that equals
a certain number called the Target Number (TN). The player on the
dealer's right chooses the TN; it can be any number from 1 to 15.
For example if the TN were 4 and the dealer dealt 5 cards, then
the following sequence would work: 8 - 5 + 1.
Players can draw new cards from either the draw pile or the discard
pile just like in rummy. Then, they discard. EQUALS adjusts easily
to different ages and abilities. For example, here's a 7-card hand
where the TN was 2: 1 2
÷
4 8 x 8. Notice the use of multi-digit
numbers as well as a fraction. Parentheses can also be used and
for serious students of mathematics the "Order of Operations" principle
can be followed. There is also a solitaire version of EQUALS.
