How to Play: LETRAS combines elements from
Scrabble and rummy and is played with a deck of 54 cards. Each
card is printed with a letter of the alphabet. The dealer decides
how many cards to deal, from 3 to 8 cards. The object is to be the
first player to make a word using ALL the cards in your hand. So,
if the dealer deals 5 cards, you make a 5-letter word. The player
with the winning hand adds up the points printed under each letter.
In the standard game of LETRAS, the first player to make 25 points
wins the game.
Players can draw new cards from either the draw pile or the discard
pile just like in rummy. Then they discard. LETRAS adjusts easily
to different ages and abilities. The more cards you deal, the more
challenging the play. Kids might play with 3-4 cards, master wordsmiths
with 7-8. Most folks prefer 5-6 cards. There is also a solitaire
version of LETRAS.
